Flag of India
About
The national flag of the Republic of India is a horizontal rectangular tricolour of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. In the centre is a navy blue wheel with 24 spokes, called the Ashoka Chakra. The flag is known in Hindi as Tiranga, "the Tricolour".
Colours
The saffron represents courage and sacrifice, the white represents truth and peace, and the green represents faith and chivalry. The Ashoka Chakra, which was adopted from the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka, represents the continuous cycle of life and the dharma of the universe. The spokes of the chakra also represent the 24 hours of the day.
History
The first flag of India was adopted on 22 July 1947, just before the Independence of India from British rule on 15 August 1947. The flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya.
